Jade Thirlwall: Finding her Solo Voice after Little Mix
Jade Thirlwall had to struggle to feel "relevant" after stepping away from the "pressure machine" that was Little Mix.
The 31-year-old singer, who rose to fame through "X Factor" in 2011 with the group Little Mix, launched her solo career under the name JADE. She recently released her first single, "Angel Of My Dreams," which incorporates a sample of Sandie Shaw's Eurovision-winning song "Puppet On A String." Jade admitted that finding her place in the music world as a solo artist took time.
In an interview with British Vogue, she said: "Little Mix was a real machine and the pressure to succeed was immense. For 11 years, I was conditioned to think that I always had to be in the spotlight, so since stepping back, I’ve struggled to feel 'relevant.' People around me tell me it's okay not to be at every event."

Speaking about her music video for "Angel Of My Dreams," Jade explained: "It reflects the music industry to which I am addicted despite its many aspects that I hate. It’s something you have to see in perspective to really understand."
Some lyrics of her song, notably "I sold my soul to a psychopath," have been interpreted as a critique of Simon Cowell, the former boss of "X Factor" and head of Syco Music. However, Jade clarified in an interview with Beat magazine: "It’s not specifically about that. I wanted the song to reflect my journey in the music industry and the emotions I’ve felt. That’s why it seems so chaotic."
She added: "The intro sounds like the montage music of The X Factor after winning, then you are catapulted into the industry. I don’t want to criticize the last 13 years of my life. I am very happy and content. Like in any job, there are highs and lows. That’s life, it’s my reality, and I want to write about it in a way that isn’t whiny."
