Sam Smith Reflects on Declining Major Lazer’s ‘Cold Water’ and Enjoying Collaboration with Calvin Harris

Sam Smith Reveals Why He Passed on a Hit Song and Shares Insights on Working with Calvin Harris

At the age of 32, the singer and songwriter was approached by the trio consisting of producer Diplo and DJs Walshy Fire and Ape Drums to perform a track from 2016. However, Sam declined the offer, and it was ultimately Justin Bieber who took over.

During his appearance on the BBC Sounds show "Sidetracked" with Nick Grimshaw and Annie Mac, Sam revealed: “The only time I was offered a song that later became a hit was 'Cold Water' by Major Lazer featuring Justin Bieber. They sent it to me to perform, but at the time, I was too busy to handle it, and we missed the opportunity. In the end, I’m glad I made that choice because Justin Bieber delivered a fantastic performance. It was really meant for him.”

Meanwhile, Sam had the chance to collaborate with Calvin Harris on the tracks “Promises” and “Desire,” an experience he greatly enjoyed. He explained: “At first, I was unsure what to expect with Calvin, wondering if his approach was different from other producers. Some producers in the studio don’t play instruments and focus more on creating the sound. But Calvin is a true creator, involved in every aspect of the music. I was immediately impressed by his talent. We had so much fun working on 'Promises.' It was an incredibly fun day, and I think it shows in the track. Calvin is a great person; he supported me and helped me during times when I really needed it.”
