Panot Announces Legislative Action to Reverse Retirement Age Increase, with RN's Support and Potential Debate Over Government Majority
On Tuesday, July 23, Mathilde Panot, president of the La France Insoumise (LFI) group in the National Assembly, announced the imminent filing of a bill aimed at repealing the pension reform. This announcement comes as discussions within the Nouveau Front Populaire about nominating a candidate for the position of Prime Minister have stalled. Laurent Jacobelli, a deputy from the Rassemblement National (RN), confirmed that his party would support the bill.
In detail, Mathilde Panot revealed on France Inter: "We will be filing a bill to repeal the reform raising the retirement age to 64." However, since the National Assembly has suspended its activities, the debate on this bill will not start for several months, unless the Nouveau Front Populaire comes into government before this deadline. In that case, a similar bill would be submitted, as it is among the group's priorities.

Panot clarified that, in the case of a government without an absolute majority, the debate could focus on the question of repeal, potentially leading to a motion of censure. "We have the capacity to pass this repeal with a majority that includes deputies from the right and the centrist Liot group, as well as the 193 members of the Nouveau Front Populaire," she added.
Laurent Jacobelli confirmed on BFMTV that the RN would vote in favor of this proposal, stating that it aligns with their political program. He also mentioned that signatures were still needed for the formal filing of the bill, which must first undergo a financial admissibility check by the National Assembly's Bureau.
Antoine Léaument, LFI deputy, emphasized on X the importance of obtaining a majority at the Bureau of the National Assembly to ensure the bill’s admissibility. Meanwhile, the National Assembly clarified to Reuters that the proposal had not yet been officially filed, adding that the date of its review by the Bureau remained unknown.
The bill proposes to reverse the postponement of the retirement age to 64 and accelerate the extension of the contribution period to 172 quarters, measures that have been controversial since their enactment in April 2023. The current session of the National Assembly, which began on July 18, ends on August 1, with a resumption of work scheduled for October 1.
