Apple's Upcoming iPhone 16 Models May Face Sales Challenges, Analyst Predicts

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo Forecasts Lower Sales for New iPhones and Highlights Delays in AI Features

Apple's upcoming smartphones might launch as early as September. However, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned Taiwanese analyst specializing in Apple products, sales of the new iPhones might not reach the heights of their predecessors. He predicts that 87 million units will be ready for the second half of 2024, compared to 91 million iPhone 15s sold during the same period last year. Of course, these figures should be taken with caution, as Apple typically does not confirm such data, preferring to disclose its overall revenue by product category.

Nevertheless, Kuo's forecasts are often closely followed by investors, with his prediction accuracy rate around 80%. He accurately predicted that Vision Pro would sell nearly 400,000 units in 2024, an estimate recently corroborated by various studies. For reference, this mixed-reality headset has been available in France since July 12, priced at €3,999 for the 256GB storage version.

In his latest report, Kuo suggests that Apple's delays in developing its artificial intelligence features might explain the anticipated decline in iPhone 16 sales. These new features will not be available in France or the European Union at the global beta launch, due to constraints imposed by the Digital Markets Act (DMA) aimed at protecting personal data.

Meanwhile, marketing campaigns by Samsung and other manufacturers heavily emphasize artificial intelligence, which has become a key selling point for high-end smartphones. Analysts remain optimistic about the sales of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, the first models to natively include Apple Intelligence. In contrast, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus may not feature these new capabilities at launch. However, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max could be updated to include them, offering options such as automatic transcription of voice memos and smart email prioritization via the Mail app.

The iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to be available around mid-September. All these models will likely come with proprietary chips, with a variant of the A17 Pro for the entry-level models and the A18 Pro for the high-end versions, promising enhanced performance.

The iPhone 16 Pro may also feature a new telephoto lens with a periscope mechanism, known as "tetraprism" at Apple, allowing for a 5x optical zoom, surpassing the 3x zoom of the current iPhone 15 Pro models.
